VANCOUVER - The Actors' Fund of Canada announced today that Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival has raised $3,800 through its annual fundraising effort to support the Fund. Five dollars from each ticket sold for the August 30 performances of All's Well That Ends Well and The Comedy of Errors were donated to the Fund, with both shows playing to full houses that evening. Bard on the Beach celebrated its 20th anniversary this year with September 26th marking the end of another successful season.

Bard on the Beach Managing Director Robert Barr commented "Supporting the Fund is a responsibility we take seriously, especially in this time of government cuts when more and more artists are finding themselves in difficult situations. Originally we passed the hat to raise money for the Fund, but four years ago we realized that holding benefit performances could raise more money to help our colleagues in need. We all work in a tenuous industry and the more we can do to help each other out the better we are for it."

The Actors' Fund of Canada is the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry. Performers and others who work behind the scenes in film and television, theatre, music and dance can apply for emergency financial aid from the Fund, which recently set a new record for the amount of financial aid delivered to industry members in a single year, topping $600,000 in 2008. The Fund has helped over 10,000 entertainment industry workers recover from illness, injury or other circumstances causing severe economic and personal hardship since it was founded in 1958.

The Fund is a registered charity that has paid out over $3.7 million in rent payments, grocery money, utility payments and other basic living expenses in the last 10 years. Performers, creators, technical staff and other production team members can benefit from the Fund, which receives no major government funding and is sustained by support from individuals and entertainment industry organizations.
