TORONTO - The annual Big Swing Golf charity golf tournament in support of the Actors' Fund of Canada returned to Brampton's Lionhead Golf Club on June 24 to great success, raising a total of $61,250 for the entertainment industry charity.

Jointly presented by the Actors' Fund and the Directors Guild of Canada - Ontario District Council, the tournament included 120 golfers competing for prizes while supporting the organization that helps entertainment industry members in financial distress to maintain their health, housing and ability to work following a personal or professional crisis.

Commenting on the event, Actors' Fund Executive Director David Hope remarked: "The success of the Big Swing as a fundraising venture depends entirely on the support we get from our sponsors and, of course, DGC-Ontario which makes an annual $25,000 contribution to the Fund at the tournament. Many businesses in our sector have been facing financial challenges over the past several months and a few of last year's major sponsors were unable to participate. However, we are extremely grateful to the steadfast sponsors who were able to stick with us and the new supporters joining us for the first time this year. With their help, we able to match last year's total dollars raised through sponsorships - a remarkable achievement considering the difficult economic realities faced by many in our sector."

Actors' Fund of Canada is the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry. Performers and others who work behind the scenes in film and television, theatre, music and dance can apply for emergency financial aid from the Fund, which recently set a new record for the amount of financial aid delivered to industry members in a single year, topping $600,000 in 2008. The Fund has helped over 10,000 entertainment industry workers recover from illness, injury or other circumstances causing severe economic and personal hardship since it was founded in 1958.

The Fund is a registered charity that has paid out over $3.7 million in rent payments, grocery money, utility payments and other basic living expenses in the last 10 years. Performers, creators, technical staff and other production team members can benefit from the Fund, which receives no government funding and is wholly sustained by support from individuals and entertainment industry organizations.
