TORONTO - Audiences responded generously to an appeal for the Actors' Fund of Canada made by cast members of the Canadian Stage Company's production of The Clean House, donating over $9,300 to the charity at performances from February 21 to 23.

The Actors' Fund is the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry and marks its 50th anniversary in 2008.The Fund provides over $400,000 a year in emergency financial aid to performers and other entertainment workers in film & TV, theatre, music and dance recovering from an illness, injury or other serious financial setback.

Commenting on the success of the appeal, Actors' Fund Executive Director David Hope says, "A life in the theatre may seem glamorous but for many entertainment workers, show business is a precarious way to make a living. We are not trying to make audiences feel sorry for the performers and people working backstage - after all it's a career choice. Instead we hope that audiences who enjoy live theatre see the connection between the shows they love and the work the Actors' Fund does to help entertainment workers bounce back from circumstances that might otherwise end their careers. A donation to the Actors' Fund today can help a talented artist go on to produce more great work for audiences to enjoy in the future. This successful fundraising event at Canadian Stage Company tells us that audiences are responding to that message. We are very grateful to Canadian Stage for the opportunity to communicate it."

Canadian Stage Company Artistic Producer Martin Bragg adds, "On every level - from the production of an individual play, to the operation of a theatre company, to the functioning of the Canadian theatre community as a whole - theatre is a very collaborative art form. We all have our roles to play and we depend on each other for our individual and our collective success. The Canadian Stage Company places a very high value on the work the Actors' Fund does to make a difference in the lives of the people who make up our artistic community. We see it as part of our mandate to support that work."

The Actors' Fund of Canada is a registered charity that has provided over $3 million in rent payments, grocery money, utility payments and other basic living expenses to entertainment industry members in distress in the last 10 years. The Actors' Fund receives no government funding and is wholly sustained by support from individuals and entertainment industry organizations.
