 2006 Actors' Fund Charity Challenge
SUPPORT YOUR ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY EMERGENCY FUND
THROUGH THE 2006 ACTORS' FUND CHARITY CHALLENGE

Who is it for?

The Actors' Fund of Canada is a national charity that provides financial aid to help entertainment industry workers maintain their health, housing and ability to work after an illness, injury or sudden unemployment. Anyone working as a professional in the entertainment business, whether as an actor, director, technician, writer or other creative or production team member can apply for help from the Fund. We all know that the industry has seen some tough times lately, and the Fund has responded by delivering over $400,000 in relief payments last year alone and $3 million in the last ten years. Over the last five years demand for the Fund's assistance has DOUBLED!

Last year, all film and television productions in Canada were challenged by the cast and crew of "This is Wonderland" to compete against each other in raising money for the Fund. Through 50/50 draws for cast and crew, Karaoke contests, poker nights, auctions and donations from producers and individuals, "DaVinci's City Hall", "Godiva's", "The Tournament" and "This is Wonderland" battled for fundraising supremacy. Wonderland won the challenge and the competition raised $15,000 in total.

Those shows are gone, but the challenge continues. This year we want to raise even more money and we're inviting all TV and film productions shooting in Canada to beat last year's total.

As an extra incentive, Directors' Guild of Canada-Ontario has offered to match any money raised through the competition up to $15,000.

What you can do:
  • Pick an opponent: decide among your cast and crew which production you want to challenge and when. The Actors' Fund can help with this by providing a list of productions to choose from, but the possibilities are endless.

  • Be a team leader. Decide to spearhead the events either on your own or with a small group. Tell people what it's all about and watch the support flow in.

  • Call your friends in the business, get them to donate some prizes, sell tickets during the campaign week and run a raffle or auction (Please note: Canada Revenue Agency prohibits charities from issuing tax receipts for money used to buy raffle tickets or auction items. Other rules on issuing tax receipts may apply - call the Fund for details). Or if getting prizes donated is not your thing, have a 50/50 draw on set, have a car wash, offer services from the various departments (make-over, tune-up, alterations, etc…)

  • Ask the cast or producers if they will match your fundraising efforts.

  • When you've decided what kind of fundraiser you're going to do, call the Actors' Fund office, that way the competition can generate some added publicity for the Fund and maybe even attract more support from the industry.
Whether you are aware of it or not, everybody knows somebody who's been helped by the Fund. The Actors' Fund needs you now - let's get together and help our own!
