TORONTO - The 2010 Film & Television Charity Challenge is now underway with entries from two productions. The Charity Challenge is an opportunity for members of the film and television community to unlock their formidable creativity and raise money for the Actors' Fund of Canada.

Dream House, a feature film starring Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz was the first production to join the challenge, raising money through individual donations. Actors' Fund Board Member Donald Mowat, who worked as Daniel Craig's makeup artist on the production, collected donations and pledges totalling $2,115. The producer, Mike Drake added to this amount by writing a cheque for $1,000, bringing the total to over $3,000.

Flashpoint, a Canadian series that has also been enjoying success with American audiences was the second production to take part, donating the proceeds from their annual golf tournament to the Fund. Every season, after wrapping production, cast and crew get together for a celebratory round of golf. After expenses have been covered, money that is left over from is donated to a charity. This year that meant a $500 contribution to the Actors' Fund.

There are many ways to participate in the charity challenge. Past events have ranged from collecting donations at a wrap party to throwing a community barbeque or holding an auction. Some of the more popular ideas have been to hold a 50/50 draw on set with half the proceeds going to the Actors' Fund, encouraging cast and crew to sign up for the Reel Friend voluntary payroll donation plan or passing the hat on set. The Actors' Fund of Canada is the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry. The Actors' Fund is not just for actors: performers and those who work behind the scenes in film and television, theatre, music and dance can apply for emergency financial aid from the Fund, which recently set a new record for the amount of financial aid delivered to industry members in a single year, topping $600,000 in 2009. The Fund has helped over 10,000 entertainment industry workers recover from illness, injury or other circumstances causing severe economic and personal hardship since it was founded in 1958. The Actors' Fund of Canada is a registered charity. It receives no government funding and is wholly sustained by support from individuals and entertainment industry organizations.
