EDMONTON - Concrete Theatre has announced that its November 7th pay-what-you-can matinee performance of Routes by Collin Doyle will be a benefit performance for the Actors' Fund of Canada. This riveting one man play, expertly acted by Joshua Beaudry explores the unexpected ways in which we are affected by violence. The company will be donating proceeds from the door as well as organizing curtain speeches in an effort to encourage donations from audience members.

The Actors' Fund of Canada is the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry. Performers and others who work behind the scenes in film and television, theatre, music and dance can apply for emergency financial aid from the Fund, which recently set a new record for the amount of financial aid delivered to industry members in a single year, topping $600,000 in 2008. The Fund has helped over 10,000 entertainment industry workers recover from illness, injury or other circumstances causing severe economic and personal hardship since it was founded in 1958.

This marks the first time that Concrete Theatre has held a benefit for the Fund. General Manager, Debbie Giesbrecht commented "We've always had a great deal of respect for the Actors' Fund, but as a company that primarily tours schools we've never felt able to hold a proper benefit. It's very exciting to get involved and know that we're doing our part to support an organization that has helped so many of our colleagues."

Actors' Fund Executive Director, David Hope responded enthusiastically to the initiative, saying "It's always great to see new theatres holding benefits for us as it really is the support of the industry that allows the Actors' Fund to help so many people. I would encourage any theatre that is interested in holding a benefit, but doesn't know what it would entail to contact us for assistance. We also have our online theatre kit at www.actorsfund.ca/theatrekit with lots of information on the many ways theatres can support the Fund."

The Fund is a registered charity that has paid out over $3.7 million in rent payments, grocery money, utility payments and other basic living expenses in the last 10 years. Performers, creators, technical staff and other production team members can benefit from the Fund, which receives no major government funding and is sustained by support from individuals and entertainment industry organizations.
