VANCOUVER - After several anxious weeks spent waiting for a resolution to the US film & television writers' strike, the Executive Board of the Directors Guild of Canada, BC District Council (DGC BC) has expressed confidence in the future of the BC film & television industry by increasing its 2008 support of the Actors' Fund of Canada from $25,000 to $35,000 to mark the Fund's 50th anniversary year.

Founded in 1958, the Actors' Fund is the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry. The Fund provides vital financial aid to workers in film & TV, theatre, music and dance to help with their recovery from an illness, injury or other circumstances causing severe economic and personal hardship.

DGC BC represents the creative and logistical personnel in the film and television industry in British Columbia. Its members include Directors, 2nd Unit Directors, Production & Unit Managers, plus those employed in the various Assistant Director and Locations Departments.

Says DGC BC Managing Director Crawford W. Hawkins, "Our members have been affected by the shutdown of productions in BC due to the strike but our support of the Actors' Fund is steadfast. We are pleased to increase our contribution this year in recognition of the Fund's 50th anniversary and in support of their efforts to raise the organization's profile industry-wide. A well-supported Actors' Fund is beneficial for DGC members and all of us who work in this industry. We encourage other industry organizations to contribute to the Fund as we have."

Actors' Fund Executive Director David Hope adds, "The Fund will deliver over half a million dollars in financial aid to entertainment industry workers this year. This is a new record high amount for us. DGC BC's support will help us cope with the increasing demand on our resources and its additional support for our 50th anniversary industry member education efforts will lead to a higher profile for the Fund and a more effective platform from which to spread the message about our work."

Performers, creators, technical staff and other production team members can benefit from the Fund, which has paid out over $3 million in rent payments, grocery money, utility payments and other basic living expenses in the last 10 years. The Actors' Fund of Canada is a registered charity. It receives no government funding and is wholly sustained by support from individuals and entertainment industry organizations.
