Unique Benefits
While holding an extra performance or doing audience collections work for most companies, some theatres (especially theatres for young audiences) find ways of making a contribution to the Fund that are better suited to their situation.
Some ideas from theatres that have contributed in non-traditional ways:
- Donate the fee from one performance of a school show
- Make an annual contribution out of the general operating fund
- Tie fundraising into an anti-cell phone initiative. Many theatres have found that making an announcement before the show that for every disturbance free performance $5 will be donated to the Fund makes a dramatic difference to the amount of people who leave their mobile devices on
- Donating the proceeds of a prop or costume sale

I Move Forward
When Marc Kimmelman was diagnosed with cancer, his friends knew that what would lift his spirits was the opportunity to create art and help others. He did just that, holding “I Move Forward” a one night event that filled the Jane Mallet Theatre at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Performing Arts. Inspiring and beautiful, the show featured speeches and performances from Marc’s friends, many of them cancer survivors themselves, emphasising the importance of attitude in beating cancer. With over 50 artists donating their exceptional talents, the program was amazing and diverse, switching seamlessly from Hallelujah to Ali in the Jungle. Through ticket sales, a raffle for donated prizes an the sale of commemorative t-shirts, the event raised a staggering $38,000 for the Actors’ Fund with money going to help artists with cancer.

Their Holiday Charity Concert at the Horseshoe is an annual tradition that raises money for a different cause every year. Last year they asked their friend Russell Willer to choose the beneficiary. An artist himself, Russell chose the Actors’ Fund of Canada. With the room packed with friends of Russell’s and fans of Bunkhouse Romeo, the evening raised close to $2,000 for artists in need.
