LOS ANGELES - Canadian actor Michael Hogan, who starred as "Colonel Saul Tigh" on the hit show Battlestar Galactica has shown his support for the Actors' Fund by donating proceeds from a costume and prop auction held in Los Angeles on May 8, 9 and 10, 2009. As part of the auction, which was conducted by the NBC Universal Television, DVD, Music and Consumer Products Group and Propworx, several of the major characters selected items that were tied to their character to be auctioned in support of the charity of their choice. The two props chosen to represent Colonel Tigh were the iconic eye patch he wore in later seasons which sold for $1,100 and a desk set that sold for $1,000. The auction took place at the Pasadena Convention Centre with a cast meet-and-greet kicking off the event.

"We were really pleased to have so many of the show's actors participate in the auctions by choosing items to benefit their individual charities," said Kurt Ford, Senior Vice President, Production Services for Universal Media Studios. "Michael Hogan was a tremendous asset to the auctions and a real fan favorite! We were happy to be able to spotlight so many different organizations with our event."

Hogan's connection to the Canadian industry runs deep; he spent many years as a respected Canadian actor, working at the Shaw Festival and winning a Genie Award for his role in Solitaire. His wife, Susan Hogan, has starred in dozens of films and their son Gabriel Hogan has been working in television since he was a teenager. With all his connections to the Canadian industry, choosing the Fund as his charity seemed like a natural option. "So many people think that the life of an actor is an easy and glamorous one, but for every person who lands a role on a hit TV series there are 200 who are doing great work, but toiling in obscurity, barely able to make ends meet," said Hogan. "I've been a supporter of the Fund for years now, and would love to see more actors who have become successful give back to the community where they began their career."

The Actors' Fund of Canada is the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry. Performers and others who work behind the scenes in film and television, theatre, music and dance can apply for emergency financial aid from the Fund, which recently set a new record for the amount of financial aid delivered to industry members in a single year, topping $600,000 in 2008. The Fund has helped over 10,000 entertainment industry workers recover from illness, injury or other circumstances causing severe economic and personal hardship since it was founded in 1958.

The Fund is a registered charity that has paid out over $3.7 million in rent payments, grocery money, utility payments and other basic living expenses in the last 10 years. Performers, creators, technical staff and other production team members can benefit from the Fund, which receives no major government funding and is sustained by support from individuals and entertainment industry organizations.
