NABET LOCAL 700 DOUBLES ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE ACTORS' FUND OF CANADA

TORONTO - Canadian audiences showed their generosity with $54,000 in donations to the Actors' Fund of Canada and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) during the recent Canadian tour of A Chorus Line's US National Company. The two charities are splitting the donations collected by cast members following performances in Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Vancouver throughout November. The Canadian stops on the company's tour coincided with the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS annual fall appeal period - six weeks of fund-raising when shows on and Off-Broadway engage in a friendly competition to see which show can raise the most money for BC/EFA.

THE SWEET SOUND OF SUCCESS: SONDHEIM IN SEPTEMBER RAISES $10,000 FOR ACTORS' FUND OF CANADA

TORONTO - The Actors' Fund of Canada announced today that Sondheim in September, a concert series featuring stars of Canadian musical theatre that took place in September and October, raised a total of $10,000 for the Fund. Spearheaded by producer and performer Warren Kimmel, the three-week series had a cast of over 50, including Dora Award winners Elicia MacKenzie (Maria in The Sound of Music), Jeff Madden (Franki Valli in Jersey Boys) and Charlotte Moore, all of whom volunteered their time to participate in the event. The final evening also featured a live auction of paintings generously donated by Andrew Stelmack and Patty Zentilli, talented visual artists who also perform in musical theatre.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA'S MICHAEL HOGAN AUCTIONS PROPS FOR ACTORS' FUND OF CANADA

LOS ANGELES - Canadian actor Michael Hogan, who starred as "Colonel Saul Tigh" on the hit show Battlestar Galactica has shown his support for the Actors' Fund by donating proceeds from a costume and prop auction held in Los Angeles on May 8, 9 and 10, 2009. As part of the auction, which was conducted by the NBC Universal Television, DVD, Music and Consumer Products Group and Propworx, several of the major characters selected items that were tied to their character to be auctioned in support of the charity of their choice. The two props chosen to represent Colonel Tigh were the iconic eye patch he wore in later seasons which sold for $1,100 and a desk set that sold for $1,000. The auction took place at the Pasadena Convention Centre with a cast meet-and-greet kicking off the event.

The event is the first in a series of Saturday fundraisers, with rush ticket sales from the final matinees of Wingfield's Lost and Found (January 30th), The Glass Menagerie (April 24th) and As You Like It (May 8th) all going to support the Fund.

Theatre to donate $5 to Fund for every cell phone-free performance

TORONTO - Tarragon Theatre today announced the launch of "Show, Don't Cell!", a campaign to encourage theatre patrons to turn off their cell phones during performances. Beginning with the November 11 opening night performance of Rocking the Cradle, an announcement will be made prior to every show that Tarragon will donate $5 to the Actors' Fund of Canada for every cell phone-free performance. If every show in the season is presented without a disruption the total donation could be as high as $1,100.

TORONTO - Four IATSE locals from Western Canada have shown their support for the Actors' Fund, contributing a combined total $32,000 in 2009. Local 891, which represents motion picture technicians in British Columbia made two donations this year totalling $26,000. Other locals included in the total were Local 669 representing Western Canada cinematographers, Local 212 representing film and television technicians in Southern Alberta and Local 168 representing stage technicians on Vancouver Island.

BARD ON THE BEACH SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL RAISES $3,800 FOR THE ACTORS' FUND OF CANADA

VANCOUVER - The Actors' Fund of Canada announced today that Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival has raised $3,800 through its annual fundraising effort to support the Fund. Five dollars from each ticket sold for the August 30 performances of All's Well That Ends Well and The Comedy of Errors were donated to the Fund, with both shows playing to full houses that evening. Bard on the Beach celebrated its 20th anniversary this year with September 26th marking the end of another successful season.

WINNIPEG - The Manitoba Theatre Centre has announced that it will once again be running Good Vibrations, a campaign to encourage theatre patrons to turn off their cell phones. Beginning with the opening night performance of Strong Poison, an announcement will be made prior to every show in the 2009-10 season stating that the Centre will donate $5 to The Actors' Fund of Canada for every cell phone-free performance. Last year the theatre contributed $2,585 in audience donations.

Actors' Fund of Canada Announces 2008 Canadian TV Charity Challenge Winner

TORONTO - The Actors' Fund of Canada announced today that CBC-TV's Heartland has won the 2008 Actors' Fund Canadian TV Charity Challenge, raising a total of $11,700 with a community fundraising barbeque, held in October 2008. Runner-up status goes to Shaftesbury's The Listener, with a total of $3,319 raised through an on set raffle. Other participants in the Challenge included The CW's Reaper, CBC-TV's Sophie, and Shaftesbury's Connor Undercover, whose efforts combined with those of the frontrunners to help the Fund realize a total of $16,200 in proceeds from the Challenge.

TORONTO - The results are in and the twelfth annual Big Swing Golf Tournament was bigger than ever, generating a record-breaking $87,700 in revenue for the Actors' Fund of Canada. The tournament, held on September 21 and jointly presented by the Actors' Fund of Canada and Directors Guild of Canada Ontario District Council (DGC Ontario) raised $37,700 in sponsorships and on-course fundraising events, an increase of $15,000 over last year's total. This combined with a doubling of DGC Ontario's regular $25,000 contribution to the tournament in honour of the Fund's 50th anniversary year led to the 2008 edition's spectacular results.

Launched with a $5,000 contribution from the branch that was presented at the ACTRA Montreal Awards by Montreal member Claudia Ferri, the branch is challenging its members to match its initial $5,000 contribution with their own personal donations totalling $5,000, which the branch will then match with a further $5,000 contribution to the Fund. Member contributions received up to September 30 will qualify for matching by the branch.

Toronto Theatre Community Recognizes 50 Years of Outstanding Service with Rare Honour

TORONTO - In recognition of 50 years of outstanding contributions to the performing arts industry in Canada, the Actors' Fund of Canada was awarded a special Honorary Dora Mavor Moore Award at the 29th annual Dora Awards ceremony held on Monday June 30 at Toronto's Winter Garden Theatre. In receiving the award, the Actors' Fund holds the distinction of being one of only five recipients to have ever been awarded an Honorary Dora and of being the only institution to have received the award. The select list of previous Honorary Dora recipients includes charismatic arts patron Mrs. Bluma Appel, esteemed Tarragon Theatre Artistic Director Urjo Kareda, legendary actor William Hutt and philanthropist and arts supporter Joan Chalmers. The Dora Mavor Moore Awards are presented by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA).

ACTORS' FUND OF CANADA LAUNCHES 50 + 50 CAMPAIGN IN CANADIAN THEATRES

VANCOUVER - The Actors' Fund of Canada today launched its 50 + 50 fundraising campaign in Canadian theatres. The campaign coincides with the Fund's 50th anniversary year and kicks off with 50 Canadian theatre companies, both large and small, in all parts of the country committing to raise money for the Fund through special benefit performances or collection of donations from audience members following regularly scheduled performances. The 50 theatre companies will then invite another 50 theatre companies to do the same, resulting in 100 companies supporting the Actors' Fund during 2008. A list of companies supporting the campaign is available at www.actorsfund.ca/50Plus50/ and will be updated frequently as new companies come on board.

TORONTO - The Actors' Fund of Canada mourns the passing of actor Barry Morse, who had been one of its two surviving founders. Mr. Morse co-founded the Fund with Donald Davis, Barbara Hamilton, Jane Mallett and William Needles, who put $1 each into a pot to start up the benevolent organization which was incorporated on May 27, 1958. Mr. Morse died on February 2.
