EDMONTON - The Citadel Theatre announced today that proceeds from rush ticket sales for this Saturday's matinee performance of Rock 'n' Roll will go to support the Actors' Fund of Canada. Tickets for the performance will be $25 and will be available at the door on a first-come-first-serve basis. The event is the first in a series of Saturday fundraisers, with rush ticket sales from the final matinees of Wingfield's Lost and Found (January 30th), The Glass Menagerie (April 24th) and As You Like It (May 8th) all going to support the Fund.

In addition to these benefits, Citadel is launching a campaign to encourage patrons to turn off their cell phones during performances. Prior to each show an announcement will be made that for each live performance that goes uninterrupted by Electronic Devices (or is ED Free), Citadel will donate $5 to the Actors' Fund of Canada. A full season of ED Free performances has the potential of raising up to $1,500.

The idea to raise money for the Fund while minimizing cell phone disruptions began last year at the Manitoba Theatre Centre and has been gaining popularity, spreading first to Tarragon Theatre and now to Citadel.

"The Citadel has had a long-standing commitment to assisting and nurturing our artists so that they can continue the vital work they do," says Penny Ritco, Citadel Theatre Executive Director. "The Actors' Fund is an invaluable organization for many of our artists, and we are very proud to be able to raise some much-needed money for this cause. I believe Citadel audiences will embrace our new ED Free initiative."

The Actors' Fund of Canada is the lifeline for Canada's entertainment industry. Performers and others who work behind the scenes in film and television, theatre, music and dance can apply for emergency financial aid from the Fund, which recently set a new record for the amount of financial aid delivered to industry members in a single year, topping $600,000 in 2008. The Fund has helped over 10,000 entertainment industry workers recover from illness, injury or other circumstances causing severe economic and personal hardship since it was founded in 1958.

The Fund is a registered charity that has paid out over $3.7 million in rent payments, grocery money, utility payments and other basic living expenses in the last 10 years. Performers, creators, technical staff and other production team members can benefit from the Fund, which receives no major government funding and is sustained by support from individuals and entertainment industry organizations.
